Cold case murder: Man sentenced for Phoenix teen's '04 death

Sergio Reyes, 39, learned his fate more than 21 years after 15-year-old Elena Lasswell was beaten and strangled to death at her home near 23rd Avenue and Thomas Road. Lasswell was seen alive for the last time going into her bedroom with a boy and shutting the door, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office (MCAO). She was found dead in her room the next day. The autopsy determined that her cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head. 8 new pickleball courts coming to Tempe Sports Complex

The city of Tempe announced earlier this week that it will start construction on eight new pickleball courts at the Tempe Sports Complex next Monday, doubling the number of courts currently available. The start of the project will see fencing go up, which will temporarily block off the two easternmost courts, leaving only six available. The project is scheduled to be completed in late spring or early summer 2026. The Tempe Sports Complex pickleball courts, which opened in 2019, were the first ADA-accessible courts in Arizona. Scottsdale hospital gets 2 joint replacement surgery robots

Beginning next year, the robots will also be able to perform total shoulder surgeries. West-MEC Superintendent Scott Spurgeon said neither measure would result in a tax increase. The current tax rate for community members is $0.13 per $100 of assessed property value. Spurgeon noted that he personally pays just over $55 per month in taxes to West-MEC. That amount would remain the same if the bond is approved.
